The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has joined the global literary community in celebrating the 80th birthday of Emeritus Professor Femi Osofisan, one of Africa's most accomplished playwrights, scholars, cultural icons, and literary leaders. As the distinguished dramatist marks this landmark milestone on June 16, 2026, ANA describes his life and career as a shining example of intellectual excellence, creative brilliance, and selfless service to literature, education, and society.
In a statement jointly issued by the President of the Association, Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi, and the Acting General Secretary, Wole Adedoyin, ANA noted that Professor Osofisan occupies a unique position in the history of Nigerian and African literature.
The association praised his extraordinary contributions to drama, literary criticism, poetry, scholarship, and cultural advocacy, emphasizing that his works have shaped generations of writers, scholars, students, and theatre practitioners across the world.
According to ANA, Professor Osofisan's remarkable literary journey ranks among the most significant achievements in contemporary African literature. With an extensive body of work spanning more than six decades and comprising over sixty plays, numerous poems, essays, and critical studies, he has consistently demonstrated the power of literature to inspire reflection, preserve cultural heritage, and promote social progress.
The association further observed that Professor Osofisan transformed modern African theatre through his innovative reinterpretations of classical and indigenous narratives. By blending traditional African performance aesthetics with contemporary dramatic techniques, he expanded the possibilities of theatre as a platform for public engagement, cultural dialogue, and social commentary. His works continue to resonate because they confront issues of justice, inequality, governance, and the human condition with uncommon depth and artistic sophistication.
ANA particularly commended Professor Osofisan's unwavering commitment to social justice and his courage in speaking truth to power. Throughout his distinguished career, he has deployed his creative gifts in defence of the oppressed and marginalized while challenging corruption, authoritarianism, and social injustice. His writings have consistently encouraged critical thinking and civic responsibility, reinforcing the vital role of literature in shaping a more just and humane society.
The association also highlighted his immense contributions to institution-building within Nigeria's literary landscape. As one of the pioneering figures of ANA and its third President, Professor Osofisan played a pivotal role in consolidating the association's vision and strengthening its commitment to literary excellence. His leadership helped establish enduring structures and values that continue to sustain the organization more than four decades after its founding.
Beyond his formal leadership positions, ANA acknowledged Professor Osofisan as a mentor whose influence extends across multiple generations of writers. Countless authors, academics, and cultural practitioners have benefited from his wisdom, guidance, generosity, and encouragement. His commitment to nurturing emerging talents has contributed significantly to the growth, vitality, and continuity of Nigeria's literary community.
The association further recalled his stabilizing interventions during critical periods in ANA's history, particularly his role in preserving the unity and integrity of the organization during moments of internal challenge. His calm disposition, institutional memory, and principled leadership have earned him the admiration and respect of writers and literary stakeholders within and beyond Nigeria.
ANA noted that the naming of its National Secretariat after Professor Osofisan in 2022 remains a fitting recognition of his immeasurable contributions to Nigerian literature and the Association of Nigerian Authors. The honour reflects the gratitude of generations of writers whose careers and aspirations have been inspired by his life of scholarship, service, mentorship, and creative excellence.
As Emeritus Professor Femi Osofisan celebrates his 80th birthday, the Association of Nigerian Authors joins family members, colleagues, students, admirers, and the international literary community in saluting a towering figure whose influence transcends borders and generations.
ANA wishes him continued good health, peace, strength, and fulfillment, while expressing confidence that his works, ideas, and enduring example will continue to inspire writers, scholars, and cultural leaders for many years to come.
