The Nigeria Book Fair Trust (NBFT) has unveiled Professor Abiodun Oluwafemi Oluwadare as the Keynote Speaker for the 24th edition of the Nigeria International Book Fair (NIBF) International Conference, slated for Wednesday, May 7, 2025. This landmark event will be held at the prestigious Balmoral Convention Centre, Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, running daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Following the success of the 2024 conference, which centered on “Universal Basic Education and the Book Ecosystem: Setting the Agenda” and featured Professor Olufemi Victor Adeoluwa as keynote speaker, the 2025 conference shifts its focus to a pressing and practical theme: “Local Paper Production: Panacea to Affordable Book Production and Qualitative Education.”

In a statement issued by the Chairman of NBFT, Mr. Oluwadare Oluwatuyi, the Trust emphasized that the selection of Professor Oluwadare was a strategic choice aligned with the conference’s theme. The Honourable Minister of Education is also expected to officially declare the book fair open, lending further gravitas to the annual intellectual gathering.

Professor Oluwadare, an erudite scholar and renowned authority in pulp and paper science, brings with him decades of academic excellence and innovation. Born on December 30, 1962, in Eyio Ekiti, Ekiti State, his educational journey began in Ekiti and Lagos, culminating in a B.Sc. in Forest Resources Management from the University of Ibadan in 1986, where he graduated as the best student in his department.

Following his National Youth Service in Benue State and a master's degree, Professor Oluwadare joined the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), where his research contributed significantly to Nigeria's industrial development. In 1998, he transitioned to academia at the University of Ibadan, where he has since risen to the rank of Professor of Wood Quality, Pulp, and Paper Science.

With more than 100 scholarly publications to his name, Professor Oluwadare is widely recognized for pioneering research in the use of kenaf and other local materials for sustainable paper production. His work on species like Acacia auriculiformis and paper birch showcases his commitment to environmentally conscious and locally driven solutions to paper challenges in Nigeria.

Beyond his research, he has held numerous leadership roles, including Dean of Faculty and Acting Head of Department. He is a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Commonwealth Forestry Bureau Prize and the Laurie Prize, and has secured funding from global and national organizations such as the MacArthur Foundation and TETFUND.

A respected member of professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Professional Printers of Nigeria (CIPPON) and the Society for Wood Science and Technology (USA), Professor Oluwadare has also partnered with institutions like the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and the Raw Materials Research and Development Council to influence policy and industry practice in Nigeria’s publishing and paper sectors.

As NIBF 2025 approaches, anticipation is high. Professor Oluwadare’s keynote address is expected to ignite deep conversations around the urgent need for local alternatives in paper production and their role in democratizing access to quality education through affordable book publishing.

NBFT invites all stakeholders—publishers, authors, educators, policymakers, and book lovers—to be part of this intellectually rich and transformative event, one that promises to chart new paths toward a self-sustaining publishing ecosystem in Nigeria.

Prof. Ernest Emenyonu Pays Tribute to Late Joop Berkhout

PROF. ERNEST EMENYONU PAYS TRIBUTE TO LATE JOOP BERKHOUT

By Wole Adedoyin

Professor Ernest Nneji Emenyonu, Emeritus Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Michigan-Flint, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Joop Berkhout, a significant figure in the world of Nigerian literature and publishing. Emenyonu, who is regarded as one of the foremost scholars on African literature globally, shared his deep admiration and personal connection with Berkhout, highlighting their longstanding friendship and professional collaboration.

Emenyonu fondly recalled his close relationship with Joop Berkhout, noting that they remained in constant communication up until Berkhout’s passing. "We were talking about the autobiography of Cyprian Ekwensi as late as 2020. Cyprian and I visited Joop Berkhout many times over the years," Emenyonu remarked. "His contribution to the world of literature, particularly Nigerian literature, is immeasurable, and he will be greatly missed."

Professor Emenyonu, who is known for his groundbreaking work on African literature, including his celebrated biography of Chinua Achebe and The Rise of the Igbo Novel, emphasized Berkhout’s crucial role in the promotion and publication of Nigerian authors. He noted that Berkhout’s impact went beyond simply publishing books; his efforts helped shape the future of Nigerian literature on the global stage.

Berkhout, who lived in Nigeria for over 54 years, played a key role in the careers of several Nigerian writers, including Chinua Achebe, Cyprian Ekwensi, and many others. Emenyonu explained that Berkhout was instrumental in publishing landmark works such as Jaguar Nana and Divided We Stand: A Novel of the Nigerian Civil War, helping to bring these significant narratives to a global audience.

During a time when many foreign publishers were withdrawing from the Nigerian market, Berkhout remained steadfast. He was pivotal in the transition from Evans Publishers to Spectrum and later to Safari Publishers. Emenyonu credited Berkhout with being a pillar in the Nigerian publishing industry during a critical period. His resilience in the face of adversity helped sustain a growing literary culture that continues to thrive today.

Emenyonu’s deep respect for Berkhout was rooted in his firsthand experience of the publisher’s dedication. He recounted how Berkhout always made time for writers, offering both guidance and practical support. "Joop didn’t just stay because of the business; he stayed because he believed in the power of Nigerian literature to influence the world. He helped so many Nigerian writers get their voices heard," Emenyonu said.

The late Joop Berkhout’s legacy will continue to live on through the countless writers, publishers, and scholars he supported during his time in Nigeria. Emenyonu emphasized that Berkhout’s work is now an indelible part of the history of Nigerian literature, ensuring that his influence will be felt for generations to come.

"In remembering Joop, we are reminded of the immense contributions of those who dedicate their lives to the preservation and promotion of culture. Joop Berkhout was one such person, and Nigerian literature owes much of its global visibility to him," Emenyonu concluded.
